iPhone Clinic

Previously, I had a lot of worry, trouble and inconveniences for about 5 days without a functional phone. Well, at least it wasn't lost or stolen so there was still hope to have it revived. You need not be in pain if customer service, apple support, or technical support do not come to your aid. You can do the fixing yourself.

Twice had my phone been sick. The first one, voiding its warranty, was when I dropped it in a basin of water fully drowning it there.

Cure #1: Reviving a Submerged iPhone
It's normal to have a first impulse of trying to switch it on while you see it slowly fading from white light to gray to pitch black and there, it's dead. Doing that is not really a good idea. Yeah, that part is painful but the best thing is to just let it die like that. The more you try to switch it on with its water-drenched internals will most probably just cause short circuit on the interconnects. Trust me, you wouldn't want that. So here's the simple fix.
1. Do not panic.
2. Dry cloth the unit. Do not shake it in attempt to remove the water.
3. Get a bowl of uncooked rice and bury the phone. (Uncooked rice is a natural dessicant and its water-absorbing power is really effective!)You may wrap it in a tissue paper to protect it from the hard grains but that would be unnecessary. Let it sit alone. Try to keep yourself from being tempted to switch it on until 5 days.

Now, try switching it on, you see the apple logo in gray. Be patient. Gradually, it'll wake up. You may encounter some dysfunctionality with the home button and such but that's temporary. You may also see water stains on the screen. That's fine. Put it back buried in the uncooked rice to fully dry it. In no time, your phone's back baby. Again all you have to basically do is just be patient with the drying part.

Cure #2: Hope For Error 29: iRecovery
Few weeks ago, it was sick again. Nope not because of some stupid carelessness like that one above. I believe it had something to do with software development releases lacking stability as claimed by other apple product owners. I was supposed to upload some pics from my laptop to my iPhone photo gallery which required an image uploader application. So I tried downloading the app. This prompted me to upgrade my OS from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3. Since I piously follow instructions, I clicked the upgrade button from the iTunes. Error prompt showed I-didn't-notice-what until all I saw was a graphics intstruction telling me to connect the phone to iTunes. This is the so-called Recovery Mode. From then on, my phone sat like that perpetually. I tried to upgrade, install back the .psw for 3.1.2 version, etc. It did attempt some initial checks but in the end it tells me the phone was not elligible for the upgrade and this error 29 kept on popping out.

The fix for this requires a bit of technical junkie in you. Simplified instructions based on the reference link* are as follows.
1. Download iRecovery for Windows and LibUsb-Win32. Either ask for Google's help or check the reference link* for the download link.
2. Install libusb from the pack if you are a Windows user. Mac users may skip this step.
3. Open Terminal/Console. Here's how. Click Start button > Click Run > Type cmd.
4. On the Terminal, type iRecovery -s
There are cases when the terminal cannot recognize your device. This happened to me. If this happens, open the libusb. Re-try step 4.
5. Execute the following commands.
      setenv auto-boot true
      saveenv
      /exit
6. Reboot your iPhone by holding home + sleep for 10 seconds.

That should do it. There. My phone's back baby! I love google and those geeks!!!
